The night of November 19, 2024, was unforgettable for those in West Washington. A powerful windstorm, known as a "bomb cyclone," swept through with fierce winds, bending trees, sparking power lines, and leaving streets eerily quiet. But amidst the chaos, a quiet story of resilience and kindness unfolded—a story of my family’s connection with the Salvation Army.
Weathering the Storm Together
Despite the severe weather, I dropped my parents off at the Salvation Army that evening. My parents, now over 80 years old, have been dedicated volunteers for years. They cook and serve meals to people who rely on the Salvation Army for dinner. That night, as the storm raged outside, they continued their work, ensuring that everyone who walked through the doors was fed and cared for.
Later, I set out to pick them up. Driving through the storm was nerve-wracking, with dangerous roads and unpredictable winds. My worry for their safety was mixed with pride in what we were doing together. The trip home was challenging, but we made it back safely, reminded of the importance of helping others, even in difficult times.
The Roots of a Long-Term Partnership
This stormy night was just one moment in a relationship that has grown over the years. For more than three years, I’ve been delivering extra food donated to the Salvation Army to the Redmond Senior Centers. These regular trips ensure that surplus food doesn’t go to waste and that seniors in need receive meals.
My parents and I have been at the heart of this effort. Week after week, they serve meals with warmth and kindness. They also assist with charity programs run by the Salvation Army’s partners, extending their help even further. Their dedication inspires me to stay committed to our shared mission.
A Bond Built on Caring
The connection I’ve built with the Salvation Army is a reminder of what’s possible when people come together to make a difference. It’s a partnership built on trust, compassion, and a shared goal of improving lives. The storm of November 2024 was just one example of how strong this bond is, even in challenging times.
Looking ahead, I’m inspired to continue working with the Salvation Army. Whether in calm days or during life’s storms, this partnership stands as a light for those who need it most—a testament to the power of kindness and community.
